Snow Rangers up Tepee Creek in the southern Madison found a layer of surface hoar buried under 4-6 inches of new snow. This layer wasn't buried deep enough to cause problems, but once capped by a thicker slab of snow, it has the potential to create dangerous avalanche conditions. Photo J. Norlander
