Alex dug this snowpit on the southwest face of Scotch Bonnet outside Cooke City. He only looked at the upper meter of snow and got propagation in his stability tests.  Small facets on a crust were breaking and he did not ski the slope. Photo: GNFAC

This pocket pulled out to the depth hoar on a steep north face up Republic Creek outside of Cooke City. This was on a peak behind Republic and was maybe 100’ wide. The weekend's wind storm got some shallower/rocky wind-loaded areas to go to the ground. Photo: GNFAC

This avalanche looks to have released naturally on depth hoar. The slide likely occurred Saturday, February 5th, outside Cooke City on the west facing slopes of Woody Ridge after a serious bout of wind-loading on a thinner snowpack. Photo: J. Logan.
