Snowpack and Avalanche Discussion

The Bridger, Madison and Gallatin Ranges, the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone, the mountains around Cooke City and the Washburn Range:

More snow = more avalanches. With SWE (snow water equivalent) totals ranging from 1.6 - 3.3 inches from this week’s storm, the snowpack was pushed to its breaking point in a few places, and several large avalanches were observed.

Snow water equivalent (SWE) is the amount of water you would get if the snow melted. At remote SNOTEL sites, it is the most accurate measurement of precipitation. SWE in the past 48 hours:

1.3 inches - Shower Falls in Hyalite

This natural avalanche was 1 of 2 observed in the Republic Creek drainage just south of Cooke City.  It occured on an E aspect and appeared to have broken into older layers of snow.  The total snow water equivalent for this area during the recent storm was 3.1 inches (roughly 3 feet of snow).
