This slide was likely triggered by a smaller slide off the ridge. The crown was 3-5 feet deep and propagated 400 feet across. It failed on a layer of facets near the ground.

More snow = more avalanches. With SWE (snow water equivalent) totals ranging from 1.6 - 3.3 inches from this week’s storm, the snowpack was pushed to its breaking point in a few places, and several large avalanches were observed.

1.3 inches - Shower Falls in Hyalite
This natural avalanche was 1 of 2 observed in the Republic Creek drainage just south of Cooke City. It occured on an E aspect and appeared to have broken into older layers of snow.
