Depth Hoar Crystal  - 11 Dec 15

Large depth hoar crystals are typically cupped and striated. These angular grains have a very difficult time bonding together, which creates a weak foundation for the winter snowpack. This photo was taken in Telemark Meadows in the southern Madison Range. Photo K. Birkeland
